Taming the Craziness of Combining Households

It is amazing how many “things” are required to set up a household.  From beds and linens to dishes and can openers, a household can include an incredible number or “things”.  In at least one moment in most of our lives we were forced to combine households.  Whether it is due to marriage, remarriage, or any other reason, combining two households creates a plethora of “things” that can be hard to wade through.  A professional home inventory is an amazing tool that helps those combining two households complete the merge effectively and efficiently.  At the same time, the professional home inventory brings peace of mind that all items are cataloged and ensures the new household has insurance for its insurance.

The first step is to take an inventory of each household before the move.   Include both large and small items.  Don’t forget to include seasonal items such as holiday decorations and garden tools.  Include detailed information such as dimensions of large furniture, warranty information and the value of items, if known, as this information may help decide what goes and what stays.  Additionally, take pictures of large items and collect swatches of furniture fabric if available.

Once this step is complete, the two heads of households can sit down with these details and decide which items should be kept and which should be gotten rid of in an organized and efficient manner.  Making these decisions prior to merging is essential as it will be much easier to get rid of things before you pack and move.

Now that the two households have become one, it is just as important to update your inventories by creating one final inventory.  With a complete and up-to-date inventory, families can evaluate the replacement value of each possession and then review their insurance and make sure they have enough coverage on the contents of their home.  Studies show that 59% of Americans do not, in fact, have enough coverage, so this exercise is an important part of a complete home inventory.  Additionally, a home inventory is crucial in order to help recover from a disaster such as a flood, fire, or burglary.

If you are planning to combine households or if you are currently in the process, contact us today!  We can provide a professional, third-party home inventory that will make the process smoother and more efficient.
